Shiels began his senior career with his local side Monaghan United after coming the schoolboy ranks with the 'Mons'. Following a number of seasons with Monaghan in the First Division, he achieved promotion with club to the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2001. Despite relegation to the First Division in 2002, Shiels remained with Monaghan United until the end of the 2004 season before he joined Dublin City for the 2005 season.
Shiels joined Dublin City for the 2005 season. Shiels achieved promotion from the First Division in his first season with Dublin City and remained with the 'Vikings' for their 2006 Premier Division campaign.
Mid-way through the 2006 season Shiels found himself without a club following Dublin City's sudden demise. Not long after he signed for Shamrock Rovers. He made his Rovers debut on 23 July 2006 [1] but his debut later caused controversy.[2] Despite this points deduction he helped Rovers secure the First Division title at the end of 2006. Shiels remained with Rovers for the 2007 season but was restricted to only 11 appearances after playing no part in the first half of the season. Shiels was released by Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 2007 season.
His next club would be Dundalk for whom he joined for the 2008 First Division season. Shiels was a regular figure in Dundalk's starting XI in 2008 and he won his second First Division title and achieved a fourth promotion to the Premier Division after Dundalk pipped title rivals Shelbourne in the dying seconds of the season. As Dundalk planned to field a full-time professional side for the 2009 Premier Division season, Shiels became part of a mass-exodus of Dundalk's First Division title winning squad after being released the end of 2008 season.
Shiels linked up with Dundalk's Louth rivals Drogheda United in February 2009 for their Premier Division campaign.[3] Shiels made his Drogheda United debut against Derry City at the Brandywell on 7 March 2009 and he scored Drogheda's first league goal of the 2009 season in a 2-2 draw with Shamrock Rovers at United Park on 3 April 2009. He made at total of 33 league and cup appearances for Drogheda United in 2009, scoring 2 goals while helping the 'Drogs' achieve their aim of Premier Division survival that season.
Shiels once again moved on at the end of 2009 to join Shelbourne on 22 December 2009 who are managed by his former Dublin City manager Dermot Keely.[4]
